About the Museum

Welcome to the Latvian Railway History Museum with two expositions in Riga and Jelgava offering an insight into the history of railways in Latvia and the biggest broad gauge rolling stock collection in the Baltics! At the museum, you will feel the thrill of a journey, find out how train traffic is controlled and how different equipment works. The museum is also an information source for railway historians, writers and artists. Here, families with children and pupils can learn about railways and rest in an active way.

Founded in 1994, the Latvian Railway History Museum is a division of Latvian Railways (VAS Latvijas dzelzceļš). To reach the set objectives and tasks, the museum’s activity is based on the Museum’s Regulations and medium-term development strategy. In 2003, the Latvian Railway History Museum was accredited by the state.

The museum’s mission is to create understanding and positive attitude towards the railway industry and the development, objectual environment, required work skills and traditions thereof within the territory of Latvia starting from the 1850s by building, updating and creatively utilising the biggest collection of railway vehicles in Latvia and the knowledge of employees and railway history enthusiasts.
